How to Crop a Passport or ID Photo Online
Passport and visa photo requirements are stricter than they look, and they're checked mechanically as often as by a human — many countries now run submitted photos through automated size and framing validation before a person even looks at them. A US passport photo needs to be a 2x2 inch square with the head measuring roughly 1 to 1⅜ inches from chin to crown. A UK passport photo is 35x45mm. Most Schengen-area countries also use 35x45mm but with slightly different head-size rules. Get the crop wrong and the application can bounce back for a reason that has nothing to do with how the photo actually looks.

- Position the photo against the guide and crop.
- Download the result at the correct size.
The crop can't fix a bad source photo
This is the part that trips people up: cropping tools handle the dimensions, but the underlying rules also cover things no crop can retroactively fix — a plain, evenly lit background (usually white or light grey), a neutral expression, no glasses glare, no shadows across the face. If your original photo has a patterned wall behind you or uneven lighting, get a better source photo first; no amount of correct cropping will pass that around.
A quick sanity check before you submit
Once cropped, open the file at 100% and compare the head size against the guide again — a photo that looks right at a glance can still be a few millimeters off, and a few millimeters is sometimes the entire margin these systems allow.
