How to Have a PDF Read Aloud to You
Having a document read aloud is useful for more situations than it first seems — proofreading your own writing (hearing an awkward sentence is often more obvious than reading it silently), getting through a long report while doing something else with your hands, or just genuinely preferring to listen rather than read for long stretches of text.
Steps
- Open the PDF Read Aloud tool and upload your PDF.
- Press play and listen — most versions let you adjust reading speed and skip to a specific section.
What it can't do
Like PDF-to-text extraction, this only works on a PDF with real, selectable text underneath — a scanned image of a page has no text for the reader to speak, since there's nothing there but pixels arranged to look like words. If the read-aloud tool has nothing to read, the first thing to check is whether you can select text in the document at all using a normal PDF viewer; if you can't, that's the actual problem, not the reader itself.
